QuickBooks loading screen appears then disappears after installing a Windows update

After installing a Windows Update, QuickBooks doesn't open. .NET Framework loading screen disappears shuts down opening 00000 39056 38772 unrecoverable error qbregistration.dat problem cannot open, . The Loading QuickBooks screen appears briefly or flashes and then disappears.

This issue is caused by a damaged component of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

Follow the instructions below for your version of Microsoft Windows.

• Microsoft Windows Vista
• Microsoft Windows XP

Microsoft Windows Vista

.NET Framework 2.0 is a part of the Windows Vista operating system and can't be uninstalled and reinstalled.
To repair .NET Framework 2.0 in Vista, run the System File Checker tool.

Important: Before using the System File Checker, ensure you have your Windows CD available. .NET Framework loading screen disappears shuts down opening 00000 39056 38772 unrecoverable error qbregistration.dat problem cannot open, . If you are prompted for the CD during the process and don't have it, Windows may become unusable.

Run the System File Checker:

2. Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list in the search results, and then click Run as administrator.
   If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

After the tool has finished running, open QuickBooks.

Microsoft Windows XP

1. Download the Registration Correction Tool for your version of Windows to repair the damage to the computer's registry:
   
   

   • 32 bit: http://sharedldfp.intuit.com/pub/quickbooks/X86/clwireg.exe
   • 64 bit: http://sharedldfp.intuit.com/pub/quickbooks/X64/clwireg.exe
     
     If you're unsure which version to download, refer to "How to determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit version or a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system."
     
2. Double-click the clwireg.exe file to run the tool.
   • You receive the following message when the tool completes: The Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Registration Correction Tool completed successfully. .NET Framework loading screen disappears shuts down opening 00000 39056 38772 unrecoverable error qbregistration.dat problem cannot open, . Click OK. .NET Framework loading screen disappears shuts down opening 00000 39056 38772 unrecoverable error qbregistration.dat problem cannot open, . If you receive this message, proceed to step 3 directly below.
   • If a message appears that Installation source could not be found, the tool did not work. .NET Framework loading screen disappears shuts down opening 00000 39056 38772 unrecoverable error qbregistration.dat problem cannot open, . If this occurs please uninstall .NET Framework 2.0 and install .NET Framework 2.0 with Service Pack 1.
     
3. Repair Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0:
   1. Click the Windows Start button and choose Settings > Control Panel.
   2. Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
   3. In the list of programs, select Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.
   4. Click the Change/Remove button.
   5. Follow the instructions to Repair .NET Framework 2.0.
      
4. Download and install Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 SP1 from the Microsoft website:
   
   • 32 bit version: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (x86)
   • 64 bit version: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (x64)
     
5. Open QuickBooks.

If the Registration Correction Tool doesn't work:

If the issue still occurs, or if there were any errors when trying the prior steps, follow these steps to uninstall .NET Framework 2.0 and install .NET Framework 2.0 with Service Pack 1.

Uninstall .Net Framework 2.0

1. Click the Windows Start button and choose Run.
2. Enter control in the Open field and click OK.
3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
4. Select Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 in the list of programs and click Remove.
   
   If you're unable to remove .NET using these instructions: download and run the dotnetfx_cleanup_tool utility, download .NET 2.0 SP1, and then install Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP1.

Download and install Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 SP1 from the Microsoft Web site

• 32 bit version: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (x86)
• 64 bit version: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (x64)

When .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 is installed, open QuickBooks.
