Error 1601 when updating QuickBooks
What is happening

The following error occurs when updating QuickBooks:

Why is this happening

This error can be caused by:

  • A firewall blocking access to some QuickBooks components.
  • A damaged esgservices.dat file
Detailed Instructions

To edit firewall settings to allow QuickBooks traffic:

  1. Edit the firewall settings to grant access for the following QuickBooks components:
    • QBDBMgr.exe
    • QBDBMgrN.exe
    • QBCFMonitorService.exe
    • QBW32.exe
  2. Edit the firewall settings to grant access to the following port:
    • QuickBooks 2008 and Enterprise Solutions 8.0: port 10180.
    • QuickBooks 2007 and Enterprise Solutions 7.0: port 10172.
    • QuickBooks 2006 and Enterprise Solutions 6.0: port 10160.
    Note: Because of the different firewall and security programs available, Intuit is unable to provide specific steps for editing firewall permissions. Please refer to the firewall's product documentation for instructions.
    Find help on modifying the settings on the Windows XP firewall.

If the error still occurs, continue with the following steps to replace a damaged esgservices.dat file:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. After the computer restarts, click the Start button, and select Run.
  3. In the Open field, type msiexec /unreg and click OK. No activity appears on the screen.
  4. Click the Start button, and then select Run.
  5. Type msiexec /regserver in the Open field, and click OK. No activity appears on the screen.
  6. Click the Start button, and select Search.
  7. On the Hard Disk, search for esgservices.dat.
  8. When esgservices.dat appears in the results, right-click the file name, and then select Rename.
  9. Rename esgservices.dat to xesgservices.dat.
  10. Uninstall QuickBooks, restart the computer, and then reinstall QuickBooks.
  11. Open a sample file in QuickBooks.
  12. From the QuickBooks Help menu, select Update QuickBooks, and then select Update Now. (In earlier versions of QuickBooks, select File, and then select Update QuickBooks.)
